SmartILR

AI-powered ILR passage rating for language teachers

ILR Reading Analysis Tool

SmartILR examines reading passages across the dimensions that ILR-trained raters use: how the text is organized, how demanding the vocabulary is, how much background knowledge the reader needs, and how complex the sentence structures are. From that analysis, SmartILR places the passage on the ILR scale and provides a written justification.

Teachers can paste any reading passage — a news article, a textbook excerpt, an authentic document — and receive an immediate analysis without needing to consult a rating manual or convene an expert panel.

Reading analysis dimensions

Discourse Organization How information is structured across paragraphs and how cohesively ideas connect
Vocabulary Difficulty Density of technical, specialized, or culturally bound vocabulary in context
Inferential Demand How much the reader must infer from context versus what is stated explicitly
Syntactic Complexity Sentence length, subordination, nominalization, and grammatical density

Practical use cases for teachers

Curriculum developers use SmartILR to ensure reading materials in a course sequence are appropriately graded. Teachers preparing proficiency tests use it to screen candidate passages before piloting them with learners. Instructors working with heritage or advanced learners use it to identify reading challenges at a specific level that are worth targeting in instruction.

SmartILR supports reading analysis in Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and other languages. Texts in non-Latin scripts, including Arabic, are processed natively without requiring transliteration.
